A POWERFUL CRIME MYSTERY WITH A YOUNG MAN’S JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY AT ITS CORE

Review:
Boy Fallen is a heartfelt, coming of age story about a boy who's bullied as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality.  And now said boy is dead - his body discovered at the base of Taonga Falls.  Did Evan Riley jump to his death?  Or is something more sinister happening here?  Det. Brooke Palmer returns to her hometown to help solve the mystery for her best friend who happens to be Evan's grieving mother.  Local Detective Collins is working the case, and Brooke will team up with him to solve the mystery of Evan's death.  Things are complicated for Brooke by the fact that her brother who was also bullied was murdered nineteen years ago in a similar fashion.  Are they looking for a copycat killer?

Boy Fallen is a tautly plotted who done it murder mystery.  The story unfolds through dual points of view - mostly from Brooke with fragments of the story told by Evan in the time period leading up to his death opening the door for readers to feel Evan's highs and lows, his discovery of first love and struggle to accept himself.  The results are dark, raw and extremely emotional as readers learn of the inner turmoil suffered by Evan as he struggled with his sexual identity.  Gill is a master at writing a complex plot line driven by a torrid pace.  His vivid descriptions of setting and realistic characters bring the world to life in a manner that transports readers right into the story as they flip the pages in search of answers.   A dark, foreboding tone prevails throughout as the detectives race to catch a killer before another person is found dead.  Boy Fallen is a raw, twisted story that keeps readers guessing right up to the shocking ending.  I highly recommend it to fans of murder mysteries and dark suspense.

Synopsis:
When the body of wealthy teen and aspiring photographer Evan Wiley is found faceup at the base of Taonga Falls, one thing is immediately clear: he didn’t jump.

Detective Brooke Palmer races down to the struggling New Zealand town she once called home to comfort her oldest friend – Evan’s mother.

But when Brooke learns Evan had been hanging out with a boy who used to bully him, she quickly gets drawn into the case. She fears this dangerous new friendship may have cost Evan his life – or at the very least, his heart.

And as Brooke confronts her own past, she is reminded that in Taonga, even those who have it all can hit rock bottom.

A gripping whodunnit through a fresh lens, Boy Fallen will keep you guessing until the very end.
