A tense psychological thriller about a mother who must keep watch at all times if she wants to keep her family safe—from USA TODAY and #1 national bestselling author Samantha M. Bailey.

Review:
Watch out for her.  An ominous warning?  Or an expression of concern?  These are questions readers need to answer to solve the latest suspense thriller by Samantha M. Bailey.  With an abundance of lies and secrets, envy and mistrust, Watch Out For Her leaves readers scrambling to figure out who to believe, who to trust and who to watch out for.  This story unfolds through the voices of two highly suspicious narrators in a past/present timeline that brings readers up to speed in what happened in the past that led to the volatile situation characters find themselves in today.

Then - Sarah and Daniel Goldman hire twenty-two year old Holly Monroe as a nanny to their six year old son Jacob, allowing Sarah time to pursue her photography.  Little do they know this will turn out to be a fatal mistake.  On the surface, the Goldman's appear to be a normal, happy upper middle class family living the dream.  Holly envies and desires the Goldman's easy family atmosphere and sets about manipulating her way into the family as a trusted member.  Everything is beautiful . . . until it isn't.  After witnessing a shocking event, Sarah realizes all is not as it seems and thus asks her husband to move their family to escape the obsessive babysitter.  In a desperate, last ditch effort to protect his own secrets, Daniel agrees to move clear across the country.

Now - After the family moves, the new beginning the Goldman's so desperately hoped for eludes them.  Sarah finds hidden cameras in their new house the first day, a prowler is seen in the yard that night and their new neighbors are a bit strange .  Cryptic text messages, moved security cameras and not so subtle innuendos have Sarah in a panic, and Daniel questioning her sanity.  The story that ensues is a roller coaster of emotional turmoil, obsession and disbelief.  Is Holly seeking revenge for being left behind by a family she staked her claim on?  Or is Sarah delusional?

Watch Out For Her is a tense, character driven thriller with an overabundance of family drama.  The steady pace gains momentum as the story plays out, and secrets begin spilling over leaving this dysfunctional family desperate for answers even as each member continues guarding their own secrets.  Readers have the huge advantage of being in both Holly and Sarah's head space as they take turns narrating the story of what has and is transpiring from their own unique view point.  Unfortunately, neither of these two characters know what the other is thinking.  While I found the plot line to be a bit predictable at times, the execution of the story is excellent and my need to know kept me burning through pages.  I was able to deduce the conclusion and the who/what/why before the big reveal, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment or the rising tension.  Watch Out For Her is an anxiety riddled ride with a menacing undertone that keeps readers guessing.  Bailey has peeled back the layers of a broken family, revealing the depth of devastation brought about by distrust, too many secrets and obsession.  Fans of mystery and suspense will enjoy this book, especially if they love character driven thrillers.

Synopsis:
Wherever you go…
she’ll be watching.

Sarah Goldman, mother to six-year-old Jacob, is relieved to move across the country. She has a lot she wants to leave behind, especially Holly Monroe, the pretty twenty-two-year-old babysitter she and her husband, Daniel, hired to take care of their young son last summer. It started out as a perfect arrangement—Sarah had a childminder her son adored, and Holly found the mother figure she’d always wanted. But Sarah’s never been one to trust very easily, so she kept a close eye on Holly, maybe too close at times. What she saw raised some questions, not only about who Holly really was but what she was hiding. The more Sarah watched, the more she learned—until one day, she saw something she couldn’t unsee, something so shocking that all she could do was flee.

Sarah has put it all behind her and is starting over in a different city with her husband and son. They’ve settled into a friendly suburb where the neighbors, a tight clique of good citizens, are always on the lookout for danger. But when Sarah finds hidden cameras in her new home, she has to wonder: has her past caught up to her, and worse yet, who’s watching her now?

A spine-tingling, page-turning novel from USA TODAY and #1 national bestselling author Samantha M. Bailey, Watch Out for Her is psychological suspense at its very best—a chilling look at trust, voyeurism, and obsession in the modern age, and how far we will go to watch out for those we love.

Genre: Historical Fiction

From the author of the “engrossing historical epic” (Booklist) The Scribe of Siena comes Anticipation, a thrilling tale set in the crumbling city of Mystras, Greece, in which a scientist’s vacation with her young son quickly turns into a fight for their lives after they cross paths with a man out of time.

After the death of her beloved husband and becoming a single parent to her nine-year-old son Alexander, overworked scientist Helen desperately needs an escape. So when Alexander proposes a trip to Greece—somewhere he's always dreamed of visiting—Helen quickly agrees.

After spending several days exploring the tourist-filled streets, they stumble upon the ancient city of Mystras and are instantly drawn to it. Its only resident is Elias, a mysterious tour guide living on the city’s edges…both physically and temporally.

In 1237, Elias’s mother promised his eternal service to the Profitis Ilias in Mystras in exchange for surviving a terrible illness. But during his 800 years of labor, he’s had one common enemy: the noble Lusignan family. The Lusignan line is cursed by a deadly disease that worsens with each generation, and a prophecy hints that Elias’s blood is their only hope for a cure. He has managed to survive throughout the centuries, but the line has dwindled down to the last Lusignan and he is desperate to avert his family’s destiny.

When Elias runs into Helen, he meets his match for the first time—but he unwittingly puts both her and her young son in danger as a result. With time running out and an enemy after them, Elias and Helen are forced to choose between the city they love, and each other.

Blending the historical romance of Diana Gabaldon, the rich detail of Philippa Gregory’s novels, and Dan Brown’s fast-paced suspense, Anticipation is a thrilling and satisfying read like no other.

"A sweeping saga spanning multiple centuries, Anticipation enthralled me with its scope. Yet Winawer’s gift as a writer also shines brightly in the small moments, like the shared joy between a mother and a child, or the meditations on loss of a grieving widow. Truly magical."—Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

“An epic historical novel that combines science, romance, and suspense.”—BuzzFeed

"Melodie Winawer’s Anticipation is a compelling novel that weaves fantasy, philosophy, science, medicine, romance, and madness into a tapestry of intrigue and mystery. I loved every word and did not want it to end."—Robin Oliveira, bestselling author of My Name is Mary Sutter and Winter Sisters

Review:
From the disastrous wedding scene opener to the controversial, ambiguous ending, The Younger Wife is a propulsive, character driven story that delves deeply into the psychological mindset of three highly unreliable narrators who second guess themselves every step of the way.  Easily manipulated, all three women suffer from self-doubt over what is reality and what is a hallucinatory dream making it nigh on impossible for readers to know who and what to believe.  The end result is a hard to put down domestic thriller overladen with dark family drama.

The Younger Wife opens in the present with a tense, confusing, disaster-in-the-making wedding in a jam packed standing room only setting. This scene is narrated by an unknown guest who's observations presage the unfortunate events to come and introduce the main players to readers in a chaotic setting that later becomes a disorderly crime scene.  However, most of the story takes place in the past as it occured through the eyes of neurotic sisters Tully and Rachel and their absurdly young, soon to be mother-in-law Heather.  Readers learn early on that these three women each harbor dark secrets that led to compulsive disorders in their youth that continue to plague their present lives and roles as daughters, sisters, wives and/or mothers.  As the story unfolds, readers learn just how damaged and self-destructive each character is as well as who may be using their own weaknesses against them.

Before the wedding:  When handsome sixty-something heart surgeon Stephen Aston announces his engagement to the very beautiful, half-his-age Heather, his daughters Rachel and Tully are flabbergasted.  First, the bride-to-be is younger than they are so what are her motives in marrying an old man? and second, their mother, Steven's wife Pam, is still very much alive although living in a nursing home while being treated for dementia.  The sisters are even more distressed to learn their father will divorce their mother Pam in order to marry Heather.  In moments of coherency, remarks made by their mother make the sisters question what kind of man their father really is.  Some scenes between Stephen and Heather will have readers asking themselves the same thing. Doubt and mistrust between all characters is established early and sets a malicious undertone that drives the pace at an ever increasing rate.  Short scenes from the wedding are interspersed throughout the story bringing readers out of the past to reinforce what's happening in the present at the calamity of a wedding before transporting them back to the past.  Throughout it all, truths about these highly dysfunctional characters emerge piece by piece as they each run around putting out fires while trying to keep their skeletons in the closet.

After the wedding:  Oh yes . . . we finally get to the ambiguous ending - the culmination of all the chaos, confusion and misdirection. It seems it's become a bit controversial among arc reviewers.  So much so that apparently a paragraph has been added to the Epilogue that may or may not clarify some things.  I read an early arc which features an open-ended, ambiguous ending that calls on readers to form their own conclusion.  While these endings are frustrating to many, I think if the right foundation's been laid, it can be entertaining for a few threads to be left dangling with a half-tied bow forcing readers to sort through the convoluted chaos and form their own opinion.  Sally Hepworth is quite an expert in writing complex, character driven stories that are substantial in family drama and light on suspense.  She's also quite brilliant at leaving readers with a questionable ending.  I highly recommend The Younger Wife to fans of domestic suspense and family drama.

Synopsis:

THE YOUNGER WIFE

Pay Dirt Road Review

Author: Samantha Jayne Allen
Genre: Mystery Suspense
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Release Date: April 19, 2022
Order Link: Amazon

3 Small Town Hearts
Special thanks to Minotaur Books for an arc of this book.

Friday Night Lights meets Mare of Easttown in this small-town mystery about an unlikely private investigator searching for a missing waitress. Pay Dirt Road is the mesmerizing debut from the 2019 Tony Hillerman Prize recipient Samantha Jayne Allen...

Review:
Annie McIntyre is a college graduate who reluctantly returns to her hometown of Garnett, Texas to work as a waitress.  A recession is making it hard to find meaningful work leaving Annie pretty much adrift in a sea of college debt and wasted dreams.  However, things quickly change when her new friend and fellow waitress Victoria disappears in thin air.  In an effort to discover what happened to her, Annie teams up with her grandfather, the former sheriff and now private investigator, to search for her friend.

Pay Dirt Road is rich in small town atmosphere and characters.  The simple plot line is well written with characters that feel authentic.  While the pace is a bit slow, there are enough red herrings to keep readers guessing most of the way through.  While Brooke tends to blunder her way into trouble without a clue what's she's doing, I like the character growth shown by the end.  This story could take place in any dead, small town American town where the biggest thing happening is teenagers cutting donuts in the local Walmart's parking lot on Saturday night.  I think Allen has laid the groundwork for a nice, light murder mystery series if she should so choose to do so.  As a standalone, Pay Dirt Road would benefit from a bit more depth in my opinion.  However, fans of lighter mysteries will enjoy this one.

Synopsis:
Annie McIntyre has a love/hate relationship with Garnett, Texas. Recently graduated from college and home waitressing, lacking not in ambition but certainly in direction, Annie is lured into the family business - a private investigation firm - by her supposed-to-be-retired grandfather, Leroy, despite the rest of the clan's misgivings. When a waitress at the café goes missing, Annie and Leroy begin an investigation that leads them down rural routes and haunted byways, to noxious-smelling oil fields and to the glowing neon of local honky-tonks.

As Annie works to uncover the truth she finds herself identifying with the victim in increasing, unsettling ways, and realizes she must confront her own past - failed romances, a disturbing experience she'd rather forget, and the trick mirror of nostalgia itself - if she wants to survive this homecoming.

A POWERFUL CRIME MYSTERY WITH A YOUNG MAN’S JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY AT ITS CORE

Review:
Boy Fallen is a heartfelt, coming of age story about a boy who's bullied as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality.  And now said boy is dead - his body discovered at the base of Taonga Falls.  Did Evan Riley jump to his death?  Or is something more sinister happening here?  Det. Brooke Palmer returns to her hometown to help solve the mystery for her best friend who happens to be Evan's grieving mother.  Local Detective Collins is working the case, and Brooke will team up with him to solve the mystery of Evan's death.  Things are complicated for Brooke by the fact that her brother who was also bullied was murdered nineteen years ago in a similar fashion.  Are they looking for a copycat killer?

Boy Fallen is a tautly plotted who done it murder mystery.  The story unfolds through dual points of view - mostly from Brooke with fragments of the story told by Evan in the time period leading up to his death opening the door for readers to feel Evan's highs and lows, his discovery of first love and struggle to accept himself.  The results are dark, raw and extremely emotional as readers learn of the inner turmoil suffered by Evan as he struggled with his sexual identity.  Gill is a master at writing a complex plot line driven by a torrid pace.  His vivid descriptions of setting and realistic characters bring the world to life in a manner that transports readers right into the story as they flip the pages in search of answers.   A dark, foreboding tone prevails throughout as the detectives race to catch a killer before another person is found dead.  Boy Fallen is a raw, twisted story that keeps readers guessing right up to the shocking ending.  I highly recommend it to fans of murder mysteries and dark suspense.

Synopsis:
When the body of wealthy teen and aspiring photographer Evan Wiley is found faceup at the base of Taonga Falls, one thing is immediately clear: he didn’t jump.

Detective Brooke Palmer races down to the struggling New Zealand town she once called home to comfort her oldest friend – Evan’s mother.

But when Brooke learns Evan had been hanging out with a boy who used to bully him, she quickly gets drawn into the case. She fears this dangerous new friendship may have cost Evan his life – or at the very least, his heart.

And as Brooke confronts her own past, she is reminded that in Taonga, even those who have it all can hit rock bottom.

A gripping whodunnit through a fresh lens, Boy Fallen will keep you guessing until the very end.

When Arlo Dilly learns the girl he thought was lost forever might still be out there, he takes it as a sign and embarks on a life-changing journey to find his great love—and his freedom.

Review:
The Sign For Home is a beautiful story, romance and education on the world of the DeafBlind.  Arlo Dilly is a young man with the deck stacked against him.  He's DeafBlind with very limited tunnel vision in one eye.  He's also a Jehovah Witness under the guardianship of a overbearing uncle determined to control every aspect of his life.  Arlo's future is bleak until a couple of things happen - Arlo hires a new male interpreter Cyril who brings along his hilarious Belgian boyfriend Hanne and he begins recalling some past memories of a lost love who Arlo thought was lost forever.  Everything together spurs Arlo into beginning a journey of regaining control of his life.  Arlo, along with Molly his long time interpreter, Cyril and Hanne, sets out on a quest for truth and freedom.  If his lost love is alive, he will find her.  And he will claim responsibility for his own life and future.  No more sitting by and trusting what he's told.

The Sign For Home is one man's journey for the freedom he's been denied.  Through laughter and tears, readers will travel with these wild characters as they slay the dragons and cast off the ties that bind them.  Along the way, readers will receive an education on the trials and tribulations of living as a DeafBlind person as well as the pitfalls of living under the thumb of a person bound and determined to use Arlo as the voice of Jehovah's God.  I greatly enjoyed Arlo's journey of discovery as well as the growing bond and friendship between his misfit crew.  The story unfolds through dual points of view in alternating chapters.  Fell does a expert job of weaving educational aspects of both living with deaf and blindness and life as a Jehovah Witness into the plot line which is driven by Arlo's desire to live his own life as normally as possible.  The Sign For Home is an inspirational, heartfelt, love story that I will remember for some time.  I highly recommend it to readers who are fans of contemporary fiction with a healthy side of love, laughter and tears.

Synopsis:
Arlo Dilly is young, handsome and eager to meet the right girl. He also happens to be DeafBlind, a Jehovah’s Witness, and under the strict guardianship of his controlling uncle. His chances of finding someone to love seem slim to none.

And yet, it happened once before: many years ago, at a boarding school for the Deaf, Arlo met the love of his life—a mysterious girl with onyx eyes and beautifully expressive hands which told him the most amazing stories. But tragedy struck, and their love was lost forever.

Or so Arlo thought.

After years trying to heal his broken heart, Arlo is assigned a college writing assignment which unlocks buried memories of his past. Soon he wonders if the hearing people he was supposed to trust have been lying to him all along, and if his lost love might be found again.

No longer willing to accept what others tell him, Arlo convinces a small band of misfit friends to set off on a journey to learn the truth. After all, who better to bring on this quest than his gay interpreter and wildly inappropriate Belgian best friend? Despite the many forces working against him, Arlo will stop at nothing to find the girl who got away and experience all of life’s joyful possibilities.

Bend Toward the Sun Review

Genre: Romance

4 Romantic Hearts

Special thanks to St. Martins Griffin for an arc of this book

A gorgeous, emotional love story about taking unexpected paths, accepting loss, and finding strength in the transformative power of love.

Review:
From beginning to end, Bend Toward the Sun is romance - a beautiful, emotional, angsty love story that will melt and break your heart.  It's been awhile since I read a straight out romance story that didn't rely heavily on humor to help carry the plot.  If you're a fan of romance with second chances, friends to lovers and broken hearts, this one's for you.

Botanist Rowan McKinnon has been burned by love . . . badly and has vowed to never let anyone close enough to hurt her again.  Dr. Harrison Brady has also been damaged in love, but he believes in love like his parents have and is searching for a forever relationship.  What he can't bring himself to do is doctor again.  A painful loss has him doubting his own abilities.  He retreats to his family's new vineyard in Pennsylvania to lick his wounds and regroup.  When Harry meets Rowan, sparks fly and he's sure he's looking at his future.  Rowan recognizes danger when she sees it, and she knows Harry is a dangerous man she needs to avoid at all costs if she's going to stay in control.  However, that's hard to do when she hires on to help the McKinnon's get their vineyard off the ground and up and running.  The vibes between them are magnetic, drawing them together like moths to a flame.  Ground rules are laid - friends with benefits only.  No feelings. Period.  How long do you think that can possibly last?

Bend Toward The Sun is beautifully written, showcasing a lonely woman with no family as she's welcomed into a boisterous, loving family like she's always wanted.  The story is paced out over a year, and the author does a great job at keeping the pace up and readers interested over this long time frame.  Devon is a obviously a master at writing beautiful prose while delivering the high angst, heartfelt romance between two people who are at different places on their journey to forever.  Emotions run high as Rowan continuously spurns Harry's efforts at moving toward a real relationship.  Tears fall as Harry struggles to accept the fact that love may not be able to fix everything, and he may never break through the walls built around Rowan's heart.  His family fills out most of the support cast and they're everything a large, loving family should be - open, welcoming, emotional rocks.

While the plot line is quite simple, the characters do the heavy lifting in Bend Toward the Sun as they learn to live with loss, accept what's gifted freely and bend toward the light, leaving the darkness behind in search of true happiness.  I truly believe stories like this are rare in today's romance.  Bend Toward the Sun runs the gaumet of emotions carrying both readers and characters on a journey of highs and lows on the way to happily ever after.  Fans of pure romance will love this one.

Synopsis:
Rowan McKinnon believes love isn’t real. Armed with a PhD in botany, two friends who accept her social quirkiness, and some occasional no-strings sex, she has everything she needs. What she doesn’t share is that she hides deep wounds from the past—by an emotionally negligent mother, and by a fiancĂ© who treated her like a pawn in a game. The only love she’s ever known came from her grandmother Edie, who taught her to care for all things that grow. After a chance encounter at a future winery, Rowan is captivated—by the beauty of the land, the challenge of the vineyards’ restoration, and by the warm and inviting family that plans to run it. They’ll offer her a job. She’ll eventually accept it.

And try not to think about Harrison Brady.

Harry Brady is a doctor. Was a doctor. An obstetrician profoundly struggling after the unexpected loss of a patient, Harry no longer believes he is capable of keeping people safe. Reeling from the loss and his crumbled four-year relationship, Harry leaves Los Angeles to spend time emotionally recuperating at his parents’ new vineyard in Pennsylvania. He’ll work to get the place ready to open, and try to pick up the pieces of his heart. Because if there’s one thing Harry Brady knows how to do, it is love deeply, fiercely, with his whole heart.

As soon as he meets Rowan McKinnon, sunlight begins to crack through the dark cloud smothering Harry’s soul. He wants to explore the compelling pull between them. Rowan just wants to keep things casual—she’s spent a lifetime protecting herself against feeling anything, for anyone.

But even Rowan can feel their extraordinary connection tilting the axis of the world they both thought they understood.

A moving, powerful novel about the ways love can irrevocably change your life, BEND TOWARD THE SUN is a cinematic, unforgettable romance.

You just boarded a flight to New York.

There are one hundred and forty-three other passengers onboard.

What you don’t know is that thirty minutes before the flight your pilot’s family was kidnapped.

For his family to live, everyone on your plane must die.

The only way the family will survive is if the pilot follows his orders and crashes the plane.

Enjoy the flight.

Review:

Commercial airline pilot Bill picks up an extra flight at the last minute and will live to regret it. Early into the flight to New York he is shown a video of his kidnapped family and given an ultimatum... crash the plane and the 140 people on board will die. Don't crash and his family will die. Faced with an impossible choice, Bill is determined to figure a way out. With his crew behind him, they commit to working together to survive the flight and keep his family safe. As the story unfolds, the tension and pace increase making it almost impossible to stop reading. Bill has a choice to make . . . what will it be?

Falling is extremely intense as you can imagine. Some scenes are graphic but delivered in context with the developing story. Characters are well developed and likable - people you might be friends with. I found the story to be tightly plotted and well delivered in a way that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Through twists and turns, readers see the crew and Bill working together to try and resolve an impossible situation. I thought the flight attendants were especially well written and performing. Emotional, tense action makes Falling a must read for fans of suspense thrillers.
