Review:
After a car accident claimed the lives of two of her children and one of their friends, Alys couldn't face the overwhelming grief, memories and guilt while trying to move forward with her remaining child and husband so she packed her things and left, divorcing the man she had loved for twenty five years and leaving him and her son who are also drowning in grief and self blame.  Two years have passed and Alys finds herself at her son Ledge's destination wedding - oddly enough, staying in The Valentine Suite that she and her husband Fletcher once shared so much love in.  Ledge is marrying the woman of his dreams, and Alys couldn't think of a reasonable excuse to miss her child's wedding so she packed her grief and heartache and showed up.  Imagine her surprise to find her ex-husband mistakenly booked into the same suite.  With no other rooms available, they agree to co-exist for the couple of weeks they'll be there for the wedding festivities.  It soon becomes obvious there are a world of unresolved feelings between them and as the story unfolds, those walls begin breaking as they forge a tentative path toward burying their grief, hurt and pain.  Alys comes to realize she has also caused her son unimaginable pain and needs to make amends.  She just doesn't think she's strong enough to approach the son she walked away from.

The Valentine Suite is a fantastic second chance romance with all the feels and emotions.  But what excited me is that it's so much more.  Broemmer tackles some tough issues in this book with class and empathy - the grief of losing a child, depression, thoughts of suicide, alcoholism, guilt, self-blame, finding oneself, taking chances.  These characters are authentic, and I alternately laughed and cried with them.  What could have been a very simple plot line was complex with twists and turns that kept me turning pages.  Simply put - I was surprised by this book and the depth of the emotional turmoil playing out.  I found it to be well-crafted and will seek out more by this talented author.  Highly recommended to fans of romance

Synopsis:
Her surviving son’s destination wedding means a reunion for Alys and Fletch, who divorced shortly after the accident. Alys intends to keep to herself for the wedding festivities and hustle back home to her quiet, sterile life when the big day is over.

When the double-booked Valentine Suite at the Kahalina Resort puts Alys and Fletch in close quarters, Alys soon finds it’s difficult to ignore the man she fell in love with over twenty-five years ago. Fletch frustrates her, but he protects her, too, acting as a buffer between her and the rest of his family and their son’s wedding guests.

Will their stay in the Valentine Suite drive them further apart and send them home as strangers or will their time together in the suite mend their broken hearts and put their family back together?

For the Love of April French Review and Book Tour

For the Love of April French by Penny Aimes is available in eBook and trade paperback on August 31st!

An Entertainment Weekly Best Romance of Summer 2021!

“This book gave me every last one of the Intense Romance Feelings I crave.” —New York Times bestselling author Talia Hibbert

My Rating: 5 Sweet Hearts

Special thanks to Carina Press Adores for an arc of this book.

Review:
Confession Time:  I had no expectations going into this book.  I accepted it for review after reading the synopsis because . . . well, I'm not sure what drove me to accept it and sign on for the book tour other than I found the synopsis intriguing.  I do read and review LGBTQ books so that didn't play into my decision to give it a chance.  At any rate, I'm so glad I did!  What a jewel!

April French is a kinky, trans woman who's smart, attractive, and a loner.  She only does one night stands as she learned the hard way that opening oneself up enough to trust another person means heartbreak.  She's just a stopping point for others on their way to forever.  People never stay in her life.    She's never been anyone's "one and only" and now she prefers it that way.  April frequents kink club Frankie's and is actually known there as "mama" for her loving care and willing shoulder for everyone else.  Just don't ask April to do relationships . . . not going to happen.

Dennis Martin is a gorgeous if slightly nerdy guy looking for his forever.  He's wary after his relationship with his ex-wife went haywire following a bad experimental kink session.  Dennis is carrying the blame and trying to learn to do things right.  When he walks into Frankies, he's looking for a new, hopefully forever lover and there sits April.  It's lust at first sight and after a night together, Dennis manages to convince April to give him her phone number.  Can he also win her trust?

Oh my goodness, For the Love of April French is a pure delight to read!  I could not believe what a sweet, caring romance this book turned out to be.  It's not simple, in fact the story becomes convoluted with some major issues to be worked through, but Dennis's undying devotion in pursuing April and making the relationship work was beautiful to witness.  The emergence of the real April French was also a wonderful experience - from being wary and vulnerable to the constant scrutiny of her appearance and confusion over her gender to a loving, confident woman ready to welcome her own forever.  I loved every single moment and page of this book.  I didn't expect to, but trust me friends - this story is beautifully crafted and written.  It delivers on the romance, the trans gender elements, the kink, the love story and the education on so many things I had no idea about.  Fans of romance, kinky romance and/or just great love stories will adore this couple and book.  Highly recommended.

Synopsis:
April French doesn't do relationships and she never asks for more.

A long-standing regular at kink club Frankie's, she's kind of seen it all. As a trans woman, she’s used to being the scenic rest stop for others on their way to a happily-ever-after. She knows how desire works, and she keeps hers carefully boxed up to take out on weekends only.

After all, you can't be let down if you never ask.

Then Dennis Martin walks into Frankie's, fresh from Seattle and looking a little lost. April just meant to be friendly, but one flirtatious drink turns into one hot night.

When Dennis asks for her number, she gives it to him.

When he asks for her trust, well…that's a little harder.

And when the desire she thought she had such a firm grip on comes alive with Dennis, April finds herself wanting passion, purpose and commitment.

But when their relationship moves from complicated to impossible, April will have to decide how much she's willing to want.

Along Came A Lady Review

Author: Christi Caldwell
Series: All The Duke's Men #1
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: August 24, 2021
Order Link: Amazon

My Rating: 4 Hilarious Hearts

Special thanks to Berkley Publ. for an arc of this book.

The brooding, illegitimate son of a duke meets his match in the determined woman hired to transform him into a gentleman from USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell—perfect for fans of Bridgerton.

USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell makes her Berkley debut this summer with ALONG CAME A LADY (Berkley Mass Market; August 24, 2021), a sparkling, banter-filled, enemies-to-lovers tale about letting go of society’s preconceived notions and finding love.

In a reverse retelling of My Fair LadyALONG CAME A LADY follows the budding romance between the irascible son of a duke and the lady hired to teach him the ways of a gentleman. As the lessons go on, the two engage in a battle of wits and passion. Rafe Audley detests his father, the Duke of Bentley, for abandoning his family. Born illegitimate, Rafe has worked the mines his whole life to care for his younger siblings. Edwina Dalrymple has spent her life making a name for herself as an instructor in etiquette, and she has yet to fail in preparing her charges for Polite Society. Edwina soon learns that Rafe is no ordinary charge. He is wholly uninterested in joining the Gentry, making his lessons Edwina’s most difficult undertaking yet. Taming the foreman would surely elevate her status, but can Edwina put her own feelings aside in order to get the job done? As the bold teacher and stubborn pupil work to sabotage each other at every turn, Edwina and Rafe will learn that while opposites attract, the unlikely pair have more in common than they think.

Review:
Edwina Dalrymple is presented with a challenge she can't afford to turn down - travel to coal mining country and convince Duke Bentley's bastard son to come home to London and groom him to take his place in English High Society.  Edwina has transformed several young women of the gentry for their coming out in society . . . A Duke's son will be a piece of cake, right?  Rafe Audley refuses to acknowledge the father who never claimed or supported him and his siblings.  As the eldest of four illegitimate children left alone to fend for themselves, Rafe has raised and cared for his brothers and sister the best way he could.  Now a grown man, he neither needs nor wants anything from his father . . . not even his fortune.  The Duke has sent several men to try to convince Rafe to meet with him to no avail.  What makes him think a woman will succeed where others have failed?  The story that unfolds is hilarious beginning with the opening scene with Edwina strolling through the mud mire of the mining camp in all her finery carrying a parasol through repeated battles of wit to a heart touching conclusion.

Along Came A Lady is funny, heartwarming historical romance at its best.  The banter between these characters is hilarious and grows more so as the attraction between them becomes undeniable.  Caldwell's characters are authentic and a joy to get to know.  The setting swings between the muddy mire of a mining camp to the fine ballrooms of London and our hero and heroine fit equally well in both places.  Readers know Edwina is hiding secrets of her own that she keeps hidden from Rafe less they destroy her, serving to drive the action at a steadily rising pace.  This author has brilliantly rendered a delightful, yet heart touching romance that fans of historical romance will love.  Highly recommended.

Synopsis:
Rafe Audley lives to thwart his father, the Duke of Bentley. The ne'er do well who abandoned his children claims he wants to make up for his failures, but Rafe only cares about protecting the people of his mining community and providing for his three siblings, who've been his sole responsibility since childhood. So far, Rafe has turned away the duke's man of affairs, solicitor, and other interlopers, until the clever duke sends the unlikeliest of people to convince Rafe to join English High Society—a bold and intriguing woman.

Edwina Dalrymple has never failed a charge. She's quite adept at successfully transforming young women of the gentry and daughters of newly minted lords to take their place in society. Taming a bastard son of a duke will be child's play, plus this job promises to enhance her reputation within the ton. All she has to do is fetch the wayward Rafe and groom him to be presentable to Polite Society.

As the tenacious teacher and her domineering, stubborn, refuses-to-be-taught pupil engage in a fiery battle of wills, their chemistry ignites and the true lesson becomes clear: opposites attract and hearts must be heard.

These Silent Woods Review

Author: Kimi Cunningham Grant
Genre: Suspense Thriller
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Release Date: Oct. 26, 2021
Order Link: Amazon

My Rating: 5 Breaking Hearts

Special thanks to Minotaur Books for an arc of this book.

A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant's These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense.

Review:
After the death of his fiance, Cooper took their newborn daughter and vanished.  Eight years later, Coop and Finch are thriving, hidden away from the world in a rustic cabin with the bare minimums in the Appalachian Mountains.  They make do by growing and hunting for food and with a once a year grocery delivery from Coop's old combat buddy Jake.  Jake and a mysterious neighbor Scotland are the only two people Coop and Finch ever interact with.  Coop is highly suspicious of Scotland, but he tolerates his sudden appearances because Scotland knows Coop's secret - knows what he did and why he can't return to civilization with his daughter.  If anyone else learns the truth, they'll take Finch from him.  Coop and Finch are happy in their isolation.  Finch is a precocious child, smart as a whip and savvy in the ways of the land having been taught survival techniques by her father.  However, eight year old Finch is becoming more and more curious about the outside world and all the things she's only ever read about like indoor plumbing, electricity, restaurants, schools, other children.  One day while out hunting, Coop and Finch see a teenage girl with a camera on their land bordering the national forest, causing Coop to have a panic attack.  While they stay hidden until the girl moves on, Coop's greatest fear of other people infiltrating their small world has happened.  Finch's natural curiosity is to seek out the girl while Coop warns her to stay away from that area of their land.  When Finch ignores his warning, what she witnesses will destroy their safe little corner of the world.

These Silent Woods is a beautiful, poignant story about a father and his daughter existing in a solitary world.  Coop's secrets have the power to destroy that world and tear Finch away from him forever.  He will not allow that to happen at any price.  When people start invading their world, Coop knows their days are numbered.  It's only a matter of time until someone discovers them and figures out who he is.  These Silent Woods evolves through Coop's point of view with bits and pieces of the past intermingled in the present. Grant's characterizations are authentic to the point I felt I knew Coop and Finch, and my anxiety over their situation grew as the story unfolded and the ending appeared to be a given.  The author's descriptions of the setting feeds all the senses from the breeze in the trees, to rivers swollen with rain, to meadows alive with wildlife, and birds calling.  It's easy to imagine being there and seeing the wonder of it all through young Finch's eyes . . . until ugliness invades threatening their existence.  It's important to avoid spoilers before reading this story to savor it as Grant renders it . . . one morsel at a time.  It's been awhile since I've wiped tears while reading the final pages of a book, but I did with this one.  These Silent Woods is a raw, emotional story that tugs at the heart strings.  Highly recommended to fans of mystery, suspense and thrillers.  Also to anyone who loves a good emotional, heartfelt story about the lengths a father will go to protect his child.

Synopsis:
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world.

For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

The only people who know they exist are Scotland, an overly friendly hermit with murky intentions, and Cooper's old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn't show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred—and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. When a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding—or finally face the sins of his past.

Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.

Catch Us When We Fall Review

Author: Juliett Fay
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Publisher: Avon Books
Release Date: Sept. 21, 2021
Order Link: Amazon

My Rating: 5 Hopeful Hearts

Special thanks to the Avon Books for a copy of this book.

If you love the emotionally complex novels of JoJo Moyes and the dramatic books of Jodi Picoult, you won’t want to miss this newest book about second chances, redemption, and the power of hope from USA Today bestselling author of Shelter Me, Juliette Fay.

Review:
In earlier days, lovers Cass Macklin and Ben McGreavy often hung out with Ben's older brother Scott, but when Cass and Ben's partying turns into full-blown alcoholism Scott backs away.  He's the third baseman for the Boston White Sox and can't allow his brother's issues to mess with his head and game.  When Ben dies from alcohol poisoning, Scott meets Cass again as they're the only two people at the gravesite.  Cass is homeless, penniless and pregnant.  She wants Ben's baby and vows to give it a chance in life by getting sober and providing stability for them both.  With no means of her own, she turns to Scott and offers him a deal.  Give her shelter for a month until she can get back on her feet, and she'll be out of there.  Meantime, she'll attend Alcoholic Anonymous, clean his house and get her life in order.  Scott reluctantly agrees, but little does he know how this woman with all her issues will turn his life upside down.  Catch Us When We Fall is the story of Cass and Scott with all the highs and lows of learning to let go of the past and live for the future.

Catch Us When We Fall is an authentic, heartbreaking story of loss, grief and forgiveness.  A story that delves deeply into the lives of alcoholics and those who love them.  I found it interesting to follow Cass in her struggles to survive the disease - overcoming the many temptations and pitfalls in day to day living - at first for her unborn child and later for herself.  The author does an excellent job of tackling the issue with realism and empathy through emotionally complex characters trying to do the right thing while overcoming their demons.  I also enjoyed Scott's journey as he struggles to lay his heartbreaking past to rest and allow himself to give and accept love freely.  Although frustrating at times, both characters are easy to pull for.  While most of this story is carried by Cass and Scott, I really enjoyed a couple of support characters - Laurel and Kate.  Both are also suffering from alcoholism and their lives intertwine in both good and bad ways with Cass's which complicates things.  While the tone of this story is dire, there's always a tiny spark of light, of hope they'll make it past the grief, pain, guilt, loneliness and hopelessness to a better life - hope they'll find new, better ways of coping with all life throws at them.  Juliette Fay delivers big time in Catch Us When We Fall.  I was so engrossed in this story that I read it in one sitting and then sat there and thought about it for awhile.  This is a beautiful story of love, loss, forgiveness and finding oneself in the darkness of addiction.  It's a story of hope for all who have ever fallen and for all who have been there to catch them when they fell.  Highly recommended to everyone!

Synopsis:
On her own since the age of eighteen, Cass Macklin dated brilliant, troubled Ben McGreavy, convinced he was the smartest person she’d ever known. They partied their way through their twenties, slowly descending into a bleak world of binge-drinking and broken promises, inebriated for most of a decade. Now Ben is dead, and Cass is broke, homeless, scared…and pregnant.

Determined to have a healthy pregnancy and raise Ben’s baby, Cass has to find a way to stop drinking and build a stable life for herself and her child. But with no money, skills, or sober friends or family, the task seems insurmountable. At wit’s end, Cass turns to the only person with the means to help her: Ben’s brother Scott, third basemen for the Boston Red Sox, a man with a temper and problems of his own.

The two make a deal that neither one of them is sure they can live up to. As Cass struggles to take control of her life and to ask for help when she needs it, Scott begins to realize there’s a life for him beyond the baseball diamond.

By turns heartbreaking and humorous, with its message that change is not impossible, that forgiveness can be freely given, and that life, though imperfect, is worth embracing, Catch Us When We Fall is a novel you will never forget.

Review:
Lucy Dennings is an outsider amidst all the hustle and bustle of New York City.  She works for a nonprofit, has a crush on a co-worker who doesn't know she's alive and goes home alone each night to her small apartment and romance books.  Her life is driven by routine until the day she discovers a gorgeous man in the alley by her apartment . . . a man who appears dead. A man dressed all in black with . . . are those wings?  And then the man or being moves, and Lucy's life is forever changed.  The stranger's name is Cyrus and when he looks at her, deeply buried feelings and memories overtake her.  Who is this man, and why is he so familiar to her?  The story that unfolds is emotional, passionate and heartbreaking.

The Sinner is one of several books to take me by surprise lately.  It's been awhile since I read a paranormal romance story, but I was intrigued enough to accept this one for review.  I'm glad I did as I couldn't put it down until I finished it.  The emotional turmoil and desire swirling through these characters is mesmerizing.  I'm not going to go any deeper into the plot line because it's truly best to read this one without knowing more as I did.  Scott has rendered a heart wrenching story of love and loss and delivered it through characters that are easy to pull for.  The ominous tone of hopelessness permeates the pages and drives the fast pace throughout until the shocking climax.  Fans of paranormal romance are going to devour this book. Highly recommended!

Synopsis:
Shy, introverted Lucy Dennings lives a quiet little life in New York City, working for a nonprofit and keeping to herself. Every afternoon, she goes home to her empty apartment and Edgar, her houseplant, and every night, she loses herself in the pages of her beloved romance novels. Her lonely heart seeks solace in tales of passionate, enduring, all-consuming love, but more and more, Lucy feels she's not just reading for pleasure but searching for a lost piece of herself in the pages. As if she once touched something beautiful but it's been ripped away.
Until one day Lucy discovers a dead body in the alley behind her apartment. Even if it's too late, her first instinct is to help.

Her second is to run.

Because the dead body isn't so very dead, and suddenly, her little world isn't so little but one in which dreams feel like memories, "inner demons" actually lurk in dark alleys, and a beautiful creature of darkness with amber eyes and wings like night might hold the key to what her heart has been aching for...if she doesn't fall down the path of eternal damnation first.
